Because I Said I Would

One of the keynote speakers at our Choice Hotel’s International Owner’s and Investor’s Conference was Alex Sheen founder of “Because I Said I Would.” His social movement and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is dedicated to the betterment of humanity through promises made and kept. Alex told us that he, “created the Promise Card to inspire others to keep their promises, but the movement has grown into something far greater than that. Our programs bridge the gap between intention and action.”

To me, Alex showed the power of social media to promote an idea whose time has come. His foundation has distributed tens of millions of these Promise Cards. We can all learn a lesson from Alex. Simplicity of your idea, relevance of your topic, hopefulness of your message in combination with the power of worldwide connectivity can mean that you can literally change the world overnight.

But more than that, Alex’s simple idea, making a promise and committing to keeping it, is such a fundamental societal covenant. You don’t need the internet. You can share your promise intimately, one-on-one, by simply writing down your promise on a card. How wonderfully effective.

I enjoyed meeting Alex and chatting with him. I look forward to sharing this idea with my managers. More at
